Doctor Who Returns With a New Doctor

As with the long-running Doctor Who tradition, the iconic time lord returns with a new face for Season 14. It was announced in May 2022 that Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa will become the new iteration of the time lord. Knowing that Gatwa will become the new version of the Doctor, 2023 also marks the show’s 60th anniversary. It couldn’t have come at a better time.

“There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honored, beyond excited, and of course, a little bit scared. This role and show mean so much to many around the world, including myself. And each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with utmost care. I will endeavor my utmost to do the same,” said Gatwa at the time of his announcement ahead of the Christmas special which was Jodi Whittaker’s last outing as the time lord.

“Russell T. Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent, and fizzing with danger,” added Gatwa.

“The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant. I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars,” said Davies, who is returning as Doctor Who showrunner. “Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor, and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honor to work with him, and a hoot. I can’t wait to get started. I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”

Filming for Doctor Who Season 14 started in December 2022 and wrapped in July 2023.

Doctor Who Season 14 Cast

More good news for Whovians as Doctor Who Season 14 has its official cast. Ncuti Gatwa will be taking the lead as the titular time lord, along with Millie Gibson as his new companion Ruby Sunday. Gibson was unveiled as the new companion during the Children in Need special 2022.

“Whilst still being in total disbelief. I am beyond honored to be cast as the Doctor’s companion,” said Gibson. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have traveled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side. I just can’t wait to get started.”

Gatwa also praised Gibson’s casting.

“Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is as sharp as a razor,” said Gatwa. “From the moment she walked into the room, she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun. I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”

What to Expect

While not much is known about the possible plot for Doctor Who Season 14. But Davies revealed what’s happening for the upcoming season to RadioTimes.com. Davies said audiences will look forward to a new Doctor.

“I can promise you a completely new Doctor, and yet a Doctor utterly faithful to the 60 years that came before. Soon, the secret will be out, and we’ll all be dancing!” said Davies, who stressed his excitement for the coming season.

“This is an incredible coup and a great honor to get such a huge star striding onto our set. So, strap on your space boots, this is going to be a blast!” said Davies.

When it came to returning to the Whoniverse, Langford already made a cameo in The Power of The Doctor in 2022. Langford said her character “felt she had to stop traveling the universe and actually, literally, get back down to Earth and face the things she’s been running away from.”

Groff, who was cast in an undisclosed role, appears to have scenes with the Doctor and Ruby in a possible Regency-era episode.

The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Specials

Before Doctor Who Season 14 comes to the small screens, there are the 60th-anniversary specials. The upcoming specials will see Catherine Tate return as Donna Noble but with her daughter Rose Noble, played by Yasmin Finney. Tate will be back in the TARDIS with David Tennant’s 14th Doctor, marking 60 years of the show on air.

In case fans didn’t know already, Gatwa will be the 15th, yes, 15th Doctor. This was because of a shock regeneration after Whittaker’s final outing, that Tennant returned. Not as a flashback, nor a cameo, but as the full-fledged time lord. Tennant is now the first Doctor with more than one regeneration.

When it came to possibly seeing the Nobles return, fans certainly hope so.

“I stand at the back of the studio. Millie catches my eye. We wave across the distance but I don’t step in. They’re busy. Clock ticking. But around me, people are drawing in,” Davies told Doctor Who Magazine in August 2023. “Crew, office staff, actors. It’s been a week of goodbyes – Yasmin Finney wrapped a few days ago, big hugs, see you soon – but it all comes down to this. The last scene.”
