Mayfair Witches Is Returning for Season 2

In early 2023, AMC confirmed that Mayfair Witches would be returning for Season 2. The renewal announcement came just as the first season was halfway through. Even though the show was met with mixed reviews, the renewal shows that Mayfair Witches did well enough in the rankings to get a greenlight for more episodes..

The show, which is based on Anne Rice’s book trilogy, “The Lives of the Mayfair Witches,” centers on Rowan Fielding, a neurosurgeon who discovers that she is descended from a long line of witches haunted by an evil spirit. Rowan also happens to be an heiress of a magical dynasty. With her true heritage unearthed, Rowan must learn about her powers and face off against the entity that has long haunted her family.

“We are thrilled with the reaction to this series, especially in the wake of the incredibly strong reception to Interview, and can’t wait to bring the fans second seasons of both series in this rich, vibrant, and expanding universe based on the works of Anne Rice,” said AMC Studios President of Entertainment Dan McDermott.

“In a business in which ‘nobody knows anything,’ we knew what we were hoping for in terms of building a television franchise around these remarkable characters and stories. And to see these shows arrive and captivate viewers in the way they have is so gratifying and energizing for everyone involved, and there is so much yet to come,” McDermott added.

Who Will Return for Mayfair Witches Season 2?

As to who will or will not return for Mayfair Witches Season 2, the first season saw a number of character deaths. Those deaths likely mean those characters won’t be returning, unless they’re part of flashbacks. This includes Madison Wolfe as Tessa, Annabeth Gish as Deirdre, and Beth Grant as Carlotta.

Alexandra Daddario is most likely returning for Season 2 as Rowan Fielding. The same likely goes for Tongayi Chirisa as Ciprien Grieve, Jack Huston as Lasher, and Harry Hamlin as Cortland Mayfair.

Mayfair Witches co-showrunner, Esta Spalding, also teased that Mona, a character from the second book, may appear in the upcoming season.

“We would not want to shy away from that character. There’s a reason we called Tessa Tessa and not Mona. I’ve seen a few people online ask if Tessa is a replacement for Mona. No. Tessa is Tessa, and Mona is her sister,” said Spalding.

What Happened in Season 1?

In the first season finale of Mayfair Witches, Rowan turned Cortland into stone before she disappeared with her newborn child destined to become Lasher. The man who shot Tessa was burned alive by Lasher at Rowan’s command. Cortland was also revealed to be Rowan’s biological father, not her uncle.

The flashbacks reveal that Cortland raped Dierdre the night she conceived Rowan to fulfill the prophecy. The prophecy was to bring in Lasher’s arrival through the 13th witch. In turn, Cortland became immortal when Rowan gave birth to Lasher. Rowan also emerged as a changed woman from the mausoleum.

What to Expect in Season 2

The first season of Mayfair Witches followed the first book in the trilogy, “The Witching Hour.” Fans can expect that Mayfair Witches Season 2 will follow the second book in the trilogy, “Lasher.” In the book, Lasher is one of the primary characters instead of Rowan.

However, Spalding revealed to TVLine that the upcoming season will feature Rowan and an adult Lasher, with the former being “an active part of that story.”

“In the book, Rowan is riding beside Lasher, and he’s the one driving the story,” said Spalding. “We need to make a show which is about Rowan. There are so many extraordinary parts of that book, and we’re going to honor them. But we’re also going to make Rowan an active part of that story, not just someone who’s beside him having it happen to her.”

Rowan Is Now a Witch

Spalding is also confirming that Rowan is “a witch now.”

“She denied it all season, going through that whole battle to get rid of Lasher,” said Spalding. “When she took on Lasher and went for vengeance at the end of Episode 7, she began to inhabit her witchy self, but I don’t think she really knew what that meant until she went through this wild journey and came out the other end still saying, ‘I want this power.’ This is really the beginning of the story of this Mayfair witch.”

Cortland May Be Back

Additionally, Spalding added that Cortland may be back to cause more trouble in the coming season. But even then, Spalding says, “nothing is nailed down for Season 2.”

A Growth Spurt Is in the Future for Lasher

Spalding also suggested that it won’t be long before Lasher hits a growth spurt. She said the show’s story “really is about Rowan and adult Lasher.”

“There’s a little bit of time to watch her become who she is and have that relationship grow, so we’re working on exactly how much time and how long it’ll last. Lasher grows up at the end of the first book. He’s almost born an adult man. We chose to freeze that moment and leave Lasher as a child for now. But we’re going to get those other events.”

Mayfair Witches Season 2 Release Date Speculation

Even though Mayfair Witches Season 2 was announced early in 2023, there’s no release date just yet. The show was set to start filming in New Orleans, Louisiana, “later” in 2023. However, the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes impacted production. Now that the strikes have been resolved, the show’s second season will start filming on January 29, 2024. Production is expected to continue through April 5, 2024.

We can only estimate when Season 2 will arrive. For comparison, the first season started filming in the spring of 2022 and premiered in the winter of 2023. This means Season 2 may premiere less than a year after filming is completed.

As for a possible third season that may overlap with Interview with the Vampire? Spalding reminds fans not to rule it out.

“The world of the Talamasca is in both stories, and we’ve talked about how that overlaps with other things being developed in the Immortal Universe. We’ve thought about ways next season that the world of Interview with the Vampire that existed in New Orleans could still be there in some form and enter the world of Mayfair Witches. We’ve looked at ways to use the city to have those overlap,” said Spalding.

We’ll keep you posted as more news on the upcoming season is announced!
