1948 – In New York City, Columbia Records unveiled a new, longer playing phonograph record, the 33 1/3.

1967 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience made their first major performance on US soil at California’s Monterey Pop Festival.

1977 – The Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten was attacked by kids armed with knives, receiving slashes on his face and hands.

1987 – Bruce Springsteen split from wife Julianne Phillips.

1987 – Claiming hearing loss, a woman sued metal band Motley Crue for $5,000 because their concert was too loud.

1996 – Beck’s released the album Odelay.
