Disney Is Developing a Live-Action ‘Aladdin’ Prequel

It looks like we know what Disney movie will be getting the live-action treatment next…so to speak.

Aladdin is on the roster for a live-action release, but the film will reportedly be a prequel. The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that the carpet-flying, streetrat-reinventing hit 1992 animated film is being developed into a movie that will tell the story of the Genie and it’s called…Genies!

The original film told the story of Aladdin, a poor street urchin who winds up with a magic lamp (home of the Genie) that he uses to change his life. According to the site, the film will give fans backstory on how Aladdin’s Genie became enslaved in the lamp. We’ll also get a first look at Genie’s home, the realm of the Genies. The plan is to apparently have Genies lead into a full-scale Aladdin live-action film.

In the Disney animated version, late comedian Robin Williams voiced the rambunctious Genie, bringing him to life in such a huge way that the big blue guy is now one of Disney’s iconic characters. Genies is still in early development, so there’s no word on who could end up with the titular role.

We’d love to hear your casting thoughts on who should bring Genie to life in the comments below!
