Percy Jackson and the Olympians Returns for Season 2

Disney wasted no time in renewing Percy Jackson and the Olympians for a second season. The streaming platform ordered another season a week after the first season aired on the service. The show is the series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s book series of the same name, following the titular character as he navigates his world of being a demigod.

“Rich in magic, wonder, adventure, and heart, Percy Jackson and the Olympians captivated the imaginations of viewers of all ages everywhere,” said Disney Branded Television President Ayo Davis in a statement. “We’re thrilled to embark on an exciting new quest and a season two with Rick Riordan, our fantastic partners at 20th Television, and the exceptional ensemble cast and creative talent that bring this story to life.”

“I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+. Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!” said Riordan on Instagram following the show’s renewal.

In February 2024, Riordan shared an update on the scripts for Season 2 on a Threads post.

“The season two script work is ‘full steam ahead’ and I love it. The only problem is I want to watch these episodes NOW. But I imagine some of you feel the same way,” said Riordan.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is created by Riordan and Jonathan Steinberg for Disney+. Steinberg and Dan Shotz serve as showrunners and executive producers. Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Jeremy Bell, and DJ Goldberg of The Gotham Group also executive produce as well as Bert Salke and Becky Riordan. Also producing the show are James Bobin, Anders Engstrom, Jim Rowe, Monica Owusu-Breen, and Jet Wilkinson.

Who Would Return for Season 2?

We can safely assume that most of the main cast members will return for Season 2. This includes Walter Scobell as the titular character, Leah Jeffries as Annabeth, and Aryan Simhadri as Grover. Given the plot of Season 2, Dior Goodjohn is also expected to return as Ares’ daughter Clarisse LaRue.

Goodjohn shared that she’s looking forward for her character to finally meet her father Ares in Season 2. Ares, played by Adam Copeland, didn’t share any scenes with Clarisse in Season 1. But Goodjohn said Copeland is “such a talented actor, and he gives all of his emotional bank to a scene. He’ll just put it all out there on the floor and give you so much to work with and play off of. So that’s one thing that I really, really, hope I get to do with him.”

Steinberg confirmed to Deadline that Zeus, will be recast for Season 2, following the death of Lance Reddick in 2023. He added that the show has time to do so as Zeus doesn’t appear early in the story.

“Unfortunately, this is not the first time we’ve had to deal with something like this,” Steinberg told Variety. “The way we tried to approach it in the past is that you are both trying to honor his performance and the character that he helped define and create, and also to make space for someone new to do the same thing, and to have room for their voice to come through as well. It’s difficult to have two different human beings inhabit the same character. But life happens, and sometimes that’s where you are.”

What Happened in Season 1?

The first season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians kicked off with the titular character having just come to terms with his supernatural parentage. Based on Riordan’s first Percy Jackson book, “The Lightning Thief,” Zeus accuses Percy of stealing his master lightning bolt. This sends Percy, with the help of Annabeth and Grover, on a quest to find the lightning bolt and return it.

Ahead of the finale of the first season, Scobell told TV Insider that he hoped the show would continue. Scobell also predicted that he’ll have to film more underwater scenes moving forward. The teen actor shared how filming those scenes was nerve-wracking for him.

“My last day was all the underwater stuff. In Episode 4, after I fall off the arch, and then in Episode 6, when I talk to the naiad, that was my last two days, completely underwater,” said Scobell. “Those were really fun, but I’m a little bit nervous for next season because – since I have to keep my eyes open, on the second day, my eyes really started burning – I’ll probably have to do a week of that.”

What to Expect Next Season?

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Percy Jackson and the Olympians Season 2 will be based on the second book, “Sea of Monsters.” Percy is tasked to sail the oceans in order to retrieve the mythical Golden Fleece. The official synopsis of “Sea of Monsters” reads:

“When Thalia’s tree is mysteriously poisoned, the magical borders of Camp Half-Blood begin to fail. Now Percy and his friends have just days to find the only magic item powerful enough to save the camp before it is overrun by monsters. The catch: they must sail into the Sea of Monsters to find it. Along the way, Percy must stage a daring rescue operation to save his old friend Grover, and he learns a terrible secret about his own family, which makes him question whether being the son of Poseidon is an honor or a curse.”

Riordan’s wife Becky, revealed to Deadline that they have started working on the Season 2 “bible.” Becky Riordan added that she’s looking forward to revisiting this story.

“Sea of Monsters is one of my favorites. I really love that we’re going to have more time with Grover, so I’m hoping that happens. It will be fabulous because Aryan is an amazing actor,” she said.

“People are obviously very excited that we’re keeping very true to the books and honoring Rick’s work,” said Shotz during the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour. “At the same time, they’re as excited about all of the new things that are being brought to this, which is really rewarding for us.”
