‘The Wiz Live!’ Star David Alan Grier Teases ‘Whole New Vision’ for Cowardly Lion

It’s safe to say that David Alan Grier is excited about his latest role as the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming NBC musical The Wiz Live!, but in the new promo Grier says that he’s actually not even one who’s most excited about his part.

The first promo for NBC’s latest live musical features Grier teasing his role as the Cowardly Lion, and laughing about how his daughter is actually most excited about seeing him as the cowardly king of the jungle. The actor also reveals that his version of the Lion will have dreads and will be a “little different”.

Watch the video below:

In addition Grier, The Wiz Live! has built an impressive cast that currently includes newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy; Queen Latifah as The Wiz; Mary J. Blige as Evillene, the Wicked Witch of the West; Uzo Aduba as Glinda, the Good Witch of the South; Amber Riley as Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, Ne-Yo as the Tinman; Common as the Gatekeeper; Elijah Kelley as the Scarecrow, and the original production’s Dorothy, Stephanie Mills, as Auntie Em.

No word yet if this cast is on board for the forthcoming Broadway revival of the show, which is set to open in the 2016-17 season.

Ease on down the road when The Wiz Live! airs on NBC, Thursday, Dec. 3.
