‘Roswell’ Reboot is Happening at CW – Here’s What We Know

Roswell is the show that started it all for us. After creating a fan site for the series that continued long after the finale episode aired, this very site was born. Needless to say, we’re completely geeking out over the news that a Roswell reboot is happening! But what does that mean? Is the original cast returning. Here’s what we know.

Carina Adly MacKenzie, writer for CW’s The Originals will be heading up the reboot of the project along with Amblin Televisions ‘s Justin Falvey and Darryl Frank and Bender Brown’s Lawrence Bender and Kevin Kelly Brown.

Brown was also a producer on the original series which was created by Jason Katims (who later went on to create Friday Night Lights and Parenthood) and based on Melinda Metz’s book series Roswell High.

The reboot will age the characters up and also add in a twist – an immigrant story twist.

The official logline for the rebooted series reads: “After reluctantly returning to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico, the daughter of undocumented immigrants discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.”

Sounds pretty similar to the original – only our Liz Parker character is now the daughter of undocumented immigrants. So Liz and Max are both going to be aliens?

If you’re not familiar with the original series – it premiered in 1999 on WB (which later merged with UPN to become CW). The show starred Shiri Appleby, Jason Behr, Katherine Heigl, Brendon Fehr, Majandra Delfino and Nick Wechsler. Two seasons of the series ran on WB before it moved to UPN for its third and final season.

The original run of Roswell told the story of Liz Parker (played by Shiri Appleby), a human high school student. who fell in love with Max Evans (played by Jason Behr), a mysterious man not from this earth. Take a look below.

If the quality of the above trailer doesn’t put into perspective how long it’s been – maybe this will… Roswell celebrated its 15 year reunion since the show’s premiere in 2014 at the ATX Festival. Shiri Appleby, Jason Behr, Majandra Delfino, Brendan Fehr, Nick Wechsler and series creator Jason Katims all attended the panel which was held at the Alamo theater on Sunday morning. Before the panel though, FanBolt was among a small group of select press to be able to interview the cast.

While the cast didn’t at that time talk about the potential of the series returning, they did talk about whether or not there could ever be a movie. See what they said below.

Are favorite moment from the reunion? When a fan asked Majandra Delfino where she thought Maria would be now – and her answer was priceless – with 3 or 4 alien babies of course. We caught a pretty epic reaction from Brendan Fehr to that very question.

My favorite #MandM moment from the #Roswell reunion panel! @atxfestival

If development goes well and the project is picked up, the Roswell reboot could hit the small screens in 2018.
