Interview: Brit and Alex

Interscope recording artists Brit & Alex are the multi-talented twins who have been tapped as the new “it” girls of pop music by producers Tricky Stewart (Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” Mary J Blige) and Dallas Austin (Gwen Stefani, Madonna).
Their sound, a refreshing blend of slinky melodies over hip-pop tracks, is the perfect blend of New York-sass-meets-London-cool.

“Let It Go,” their single and video from the movie and soundtrack Step Up 2, The Streets, is an early taste of what Brit & Alex have to offer.

DVD Review: Nancy Drew

Nancy Drew certainly isn’t a newcomer, as she has been the main star of her own book series for years. Most girls grew up reading about her mysteries and enjoying TV shows of a similar premise. Veronica Mars anyone?

I was more than delighted when I heard that Warner Brothers was releasing this film

DVD Review: Hitman

Hitman is based off of the popular video game series of the same name. This gives you a brief idea of what you can expect, especially if you’ve played the game. If not, you can still guess that this title will be full of violence, have lots of guns, and a lack luster storyline. You can check all 3 of those off for Hitman.

Leerone Review: Imaginary Biographies

There’s something so subtle and beautiful about Leerone and her music. It’s clear her old soul bares much to discuss with the world. Her poetic lyrics mesh with haunting melodies that stay with you long after you’ve listened to her music. In our review for Leerone’s last release “Hail to the Queen” we mentioned how her music immediately transports you to an unknown time and place that feels eerily familiar…

Interview: Kimya Dawson from Juno Soundtrack

The Juno soundtrack was initially rolled out to digital retailers in December as the film was opening in select cities. Juno has steadily gained momentum in the marketplace thanks to strong word of mouth — and an unusual degree of synergy between the movie and its soundtrack. The film’s young star, Ellen Page, suggested using the music of The Moldy Peaches, and the 19-track Juno soundtrack includes eight songs featuring that band’s Kimya Dawson. The album debuted on the Billboard Top 10 — largely on the strength of digital sales.

We had the honor of sitting down with Kimya Dawson to talk about her work with the Juno soundtrack, Moldly Peaches, and what’s next for the singer! Here’s what she had to say:

Interview: Sean Faris from Never Back Down

Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial Arts, NEVER BACK DOWN is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid who leads with his fists, and, often, with his heart. Jake Tyler, played by Sean Faris, is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved to Orlando, Florida with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother’s shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler.

Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja (Amber Heard), Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McCarthy (Cam Gigandet). While he is defeated and humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport known as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua, played by Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America).

It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather an art form he wants to master. Roqua will take Jake under his wing, but it is up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, willingness and reason within him to succeed. For Jake, there is much more at stake than mere victory. His decision will not just settle a score; it will define who he is.

We had the honor of sitting down with Sean Faris who plays Jake Tyler in the film, and here’s what he had to say:

DVD Review: Margot At The Wedding

From the Academy Award nominated writer/director Noah Baumbach, the same mastermind that brought us The Squid and The Whale, comes an equally insightful and psychologically disturbing film about family relationships and the chaos that surrounds them.

Interview: Donita Sparks

Donita Sparks co-founded the heavy riff-oriented band L7 in 1985. L7 released six studio albums, one live CD, and one greatest hits record. Their 1992 release Bricks Are Heavy was included in Rolling Stone’s list of “Essential Albums of the 1990s”. With their recording career beginning in 1987 and continuing through the ’90s, L7 spawned underground and mainstream hits such as: Shove, Pretend We’re Dead, Shitlist, Andres, and Fuel My Fire.

Touring the world countless times, L7 also graced the main-stage of Lollapalooza in 1994 and appeared in the John Waters movie Serial Mom as the band “Camel Lips”. In 1991 Donita and L7 formed Rock For Choice with the Feminist Majority Foundation which staged numerous concerts benefiting pro-choice organizations.

Recently, Donita along with Kristin Hersh launched CASH Music (Coalition of Artists and Stake Holders). CASH Music is a platform for artists to create a sustainable livelihood and more interaction/exchange with their fans. In addition, Donita contributed to the score of the 2007 feature film The Life of Reilly (starring the late Charles Nelson Reilly). She writes a weekly music column “The Spin I’m In” for the popular, politically progressive blog Firedoglake.com. Donita also created a mash-up of Brazilian rock sensations CSS (vs. L7) in response to the band doing a lively cover of the Sparks’ penned L7 classic Pretend We’re Dead. The mash-up, Pretend We’re Alala, can be heard on L7’s and CSS’s MySpace pages.

We had the honor of sitting down with Donita to discuss her new album, her days with L7, touring with Nirvana, and her business venture with Cash Music. Here’s what she had to say:
