Shutter Island Review: Into Shocked Corridors

In his long thirty-eight year career the living legend that is Martin Scorsese has made some amazing pictures (Raging Bull, Goodfellas) and some particularly dubious ones (Bring Out the Dead,Gangs of New York). His latest, Shutter Island, falls closer to the former category than the latter, but will never be counted among his best. Nonetheless this noir throwback starts out as a straightforward thriller, but ends up as a mind-bending example of why Scorsese isn’t just a name, it is a force to be reckoned with.

DVD Review: Amelia

Director Mira Nair has been working hard for two decades, putting out almost two dozen pictures, some which have netted her critical acclaim. She’s responsible for creating “The Perez Family,” “Monsoon Wedding,” “Vanity Fair,” and a segment of “New York, I Love You” just to name a few. She’s not afraid to take on foreign projects, and has a way to naturally lure people’s interests in alternate directions.

The Wolfman Review: Classic And Deliciously Dark

The Wolfman is a throw-back to the classic horror movies. If you like that genre – then you’ll love this film. While it is a remake of the 1941 film – it has enough new and old styles mixed together to make it something truly unique.

I attended the screening here in Atlanta for the film this last Wednesday, and I have to say I was truly amazed at the reaction of the lucky radio winners and other audience members who screamed and shreaked at all the right moments. The fans must have been in heaven to be surrounded by people as passionate about the genre as they were – and to be viewing such a well-done remake.

David Self Talks ‘RoboCop’

Writer David Self (The Wolfman) recently spoke about one of his other projects, RoboCop. He said, “I’m still involved with it and Darren Aronofsky’s still

From Paris with Love Review: The Morel of the Story Is…

After last year’s Taken burst onto the scene director Pierre Morel became a hot property. According to IMDb that film took in over $145 million domestically and even more in Europe, so the man had his pick of what to do next. His choice, From Paris with Love, is a miscast mess. Showing off his sizable talents in action movies in both Taken, and his debut feature District B13, Morel should have been a sure bet to take the reigns of this action-buddy comedy, but his previous work was under the watchful eye of his mentor, Luc Besson, who co-wrote and produced both films. With the latest picture it seems like Besson loosened the reigns, giving his protege room to run, but it could be that maybe Morel should have been kept on a shorter leash.

DVD Review: Whip It

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost three decades since the world fell in love with cute, little Drew Barrymore in Steven Spielberg’s “E.T.” His mentoring behind the camera must have had more effect on Drew than he realized. When an opportunity to direct “Whip It” landed in her lap, she hopped at the chance.

DVD Review: Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat is a vacation well worth taking. The romantic comedy has a little something for the guys and the gals – a satisfying and difficult combination to find. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s perfect for those couples who want to stay in and snuggle up for a good movie.

DVD Review: Mystic River

With an amazing all-star cast, it doesn’t take much more than just looking at the DVD case to realize that this is going to be a good film. It’s not exactly a new movie, but it is new to Blu-ray which means that you’re going to get some extra special features…

Edge Of Darkness Review: The Passion Of Mel

Sometimes it is hard to separate the performer from the performance. Those like Tom Cruise or Russell Crowe’s off screen shenanigans can make it hard to take their on screen work seriously, even though they can be very good actors. Never is this truer than when it comes to Mel Gibson. His often outspoken nature really came back to bite him after all that Anti-Semitic episode back in 2004, and as a result his recognizable face has been notably absent from the Silver Screen ever since. In fact Gibson hasn’t headlined a film since 2002’s “Signs,” and because in Tinsel Town eight years is almost a life time it is understandable that “Edge of Darkness,” Gibson’s return to the limelight, was slated for a January release; call it a screen test for a once major player in Hollywood, to see if he still packs the power he did when he was at his zenith. But if Mel proves a box office draw once again all will be forgiven because, as we all know, if there is one thing that those Hollywood types love more than hating Anti-Semitism, it is money.
