Awesomenauts Review: Awesome Online Battles

Awesomenauts
Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network
Action

Awesomenauts is a side scrolling action platformer that you will take online in a 3 vs 3 territory battle. The main goal of the game is to get through your opponent’s turrets and destroy the opponent’s base. There are different level designs that change it up, but the end goal is still the same. You have up to 6 unique characters to choose from and of course you will need to rank up first in order to unlock the other characters. Each character is unique in many different ways. Each character has a number of different abilities and there are more to unlock as you progress in your overall rank in the game. Before the game starts you select the abilities you like from a list made available for you to use in the upcoming match. You will need to collect enough “coins” to be able to purchase them in game.

That’s one of the things I like a lot about this game. While you have many abilities available to you as you begin a new match online, you will only be able to purchase one of those abilities to start with. You will need to play in the round and destroy some enemy robots or accomplish other things to collect “coins” in order to purchase more of your selected upgrades. So basically, right at the start, everyone will start out even and at the same rank, but whoever can upgrade their character the fastest will be the one that more than likely dominates the game. So, using skill and strategy are important when playing through this game.

The fighting in this game is a lot of fun. Each character fights in their own unique way and has their own special weapons and uses. This may take you some time to get used to with all the different play types and strategies that take place. I experienced games where I would be one character and be dominated by another character and so I’d then try to be that character the next game. I found that the characters are matched up well when it comes to both strength and weaknesses. So it is quite fun to try and figure out which character has which strength and which weakness, especially so when playing with a team of friends and trying to figure out what the other team is using and then going up against that challenge.

It took me some time to get used to this game, but once I did, I found myself to really enjoy and appreciate the gameplay that it offers. The combat and team play ends up being a fun and unique experience. When you learn this game and play the strategy the right way, you will probably find yourself winning rooms a lot of the time, or at least giving the opponent a difficult time. This will become even more fun when you are playing with friends and you can work together. I really enjoyed what this title had to offer. There are a lot of items to unlock and it keeps track of a good amount of stats. I can see this title being fairly addictive for some people.
