Loki Returns for Season 2

The reception to Loki in its first season was enough for Disney+ to renew the spinoff for a second season. The renewal announcement took the form of a mid-credit sequence in the first season’s finale in July 2021.

Loki Season 2 will also be part of the MCU’s Phase Five, which started on February 17, 2023, with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. The second season was also among the slate of shows that were mentioned during the D23 Expo from September 9 to 11, 2022. At the time, Marvel shared some information with Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who revealed that Loki is still trying to make sense of everything that happened after the season one finale.

“I am so grateful that we got to do season on. I still am not quite able to process that we get to have another go at this,” Tom Hiddleston, who plays the titular character, told Marvel.com at the time of the initial renewal announcement.

He went on to say, “I am so excited by the possibilities. We are already in discussions. Deep, deep, deep discussions. I can’t wait to get started.”

“I want to say thank you to the audience. Because without the audience, we wouldn’t be able to make a season two,” said Hiddleston.”I hope season one was full of surprises. And I think season two will be full of even more.”

Loki Season 2 Trailer

Disney+ also recently teased a few seconds of footage from Loki Season 2 in their trailer for their 2023 releases. On August 14, fans were treated to more new footage, from none other than McDonald’s in its “As Featured in Meal.” A 30-second clip was also released on September 4, which showed Loki time-slipping through different timelines and realities in the past and present.

Loki Season 1 Recap

The first season of Loki set up the multiverse premise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It begins as Loki uses the Tesseract to escape capture after his attack on New York in 2012. He transports, but the Time Variance Authority intercepts him. They take him to their headquarters, where he gets tried and condemned as a Variant.

Mobius, a TVA agent, shows Loki a montage of his past crimes and his future, where he causes his mother’s death. Loki agrees to help Mobius capture an even more dangerous Loki variant that kills other TVA agents.

Loki deduces that the variant hides in apocalyptic events. The TVA determines that the variant is currently hiding in a hurricane in Alabama in the year 2050. Loki confronts the variant who he discovers is a woman that goes by the name Sylvie. She escapes after rebuffing his offer to overthrow the TVA together.

She uses the distraction to infiltrate the TVA in search of the Time Keepers. Loki corners her and they both get attacked by Renslayer. Loki uses a TemPad to bring them to 2077 Lamentis-1, a moon about to be crushed by a planet. They work together to attempt to charge the TemPad to escape but ultimately fail. When they form a romantic bond, they create a time branch and the TVA collects them before the moon’s demise.

They end up in front of the Time Keepers, but when they behead one, they discover the Keepers are only androids. Renslayer prunes Loki and Sylvie overpowers Renslayer demanding answers.

The Void

Loki winds up in the Void, a place after all time, and discovers many other pruned Loki variants. Sylvie prunes herself to discover where Loki went and get closer to the true Time Keeper.

Sylvie, Loki, and Mobius reunite in the Void, and with the help of other Variants, Sylvie, and Loki enchant Alioth, a giant creature guarding the true Time Keeper. They head to the citadel and meet Kang: He Who Remains.

He gives them a choice: kill him and begin a multiversal war where countless other versions of himself destroy the universe or take over his position as the protector of the sacred timeline.

Sylvie kisses Loki to distract him and sends him back to the TVA so she can kill Kang. When Loki returns, he’s on a different timeline. Mobius doesn’t remember anything Loki tries to tell him. And a statue of Kang has replaced a statue of the Time Keepers.

Season 1 Creative Direction

Director Kate Herron played a large role in the creative direction and creation of Season 1. When asked if she would return for Season 2, she said that she was so focused on Season 1 that she couldn’t think about future seasons.

She said, “I think for me, I’m just so focused on this story. And I’ve been so wrapped up in it for two years. I think I poured every aspect of my soul and my time into the show, and I think for me, that’s where my head’s at really, is just focusing on this.”

On the production of the first season, she said, “We were treating it like a movie, and we were running it like a movie. We weren’t doing it in the showrunner system. So it was a lot to direct these six episodes, and I gave it all of my energy and everything I had in my soul and in my heart. I threw everything I loved about Marvel at it.”

Whoever replaces her certainly has big shoes to fill.

Loki Season 2 Plot

Hiddleston previously teased that Season 2 would focus on “the war for the soul of the TVA.” This means that the upcoming season will continue exploring the fallout from Sylvie’s killing of He Who Remains. Sylvie pushed Loki through the time door, he ended up at a Time Variance Authority where no one knew him. Loki would be struggling to assist this version of the TVA in finding an answer. Season 2 would also delve into the TVA personnel who were forced to forget their previous lives.

Wilson also confirmed that Loki Season 2 will further explore Mobius’s story, possibly revealing the character’s life before the TVA.

“I thought I would have a good time but I really enjoyed it. I’ve been lucky working on a million movies and always having a good time but on that one, I had a really great time and that continued on Season 2. Maybe even more so because we were filming in London and being there at Pinewood but yeah,” said Wilson.

In one of the scenes shown in the trailers, Sylvie is shown working at a McDonald’s. Loki executive producer Kevin Wright also hinted at what else could be expected for Sylvie in Season 2.

“This character had been on a decades-long, maybe centuries-long revenge mission and the classic trope of those stories is that it’s all-consuming and she’s not thinking about what comes next. Now she has this moment of opportunity, where is she going to go?” said Wright.

Loki Cast

As for those who will return for Loki Season 2, eight characters of the franchise were confirmed based on the D23 footage. In May 2022, Feige announced at the time that the entire cast of season one would come back.

This means Hiddleston as the titular character, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Tara Strong as Miss Minutes, Owen Wilson as Mobius M. Mobius, Sophia Di Martino as Sylvie, and Eugene Corder as Casey or Hunter K-5E.

Jonathan Majors may also appear for Loki Season 2 as Kang the Conqueror, a variant of He Who Remains.  He practically promised it when he foreshadowed what would occur if the Lokis took him out. The massive statue of Kang in the TVA at the end of the final episode assured viewers that he will loom large in Loki Season 2.

Cordero told CBR that fans can look forward to more of Casey in Season 2, adding that he can’t say anything that can give away the upcoming season. “There’s so many passwords and passcodes that I have to fill out just to even look at the pages that I’m on, and the way that it works is things constantly change in a great way.”

In September, Ke Huy Quan was confirmed to be cast as a Time Variance Authority archivist, as seen in the teaser trailer. Kate Dickie will also appear in an undisclosed role.

Other Marvel characters, or perhaps their Variants, may also appear for Loki Season 2.
