‘Loki’ Season 2: What Fans Need to Know

Loki Season 2

Of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4 productions, Tom Hiddleston’s was the first of the TV shows to get greenlit for a second season. Disney promised that Loki Season 2 will hit Disney+ before too long. So what universe can we expect to see our antihero explore in the next season? How will it align with the current Marvel comic movie lineup?

Here’s everything we know about Loki Season 2.

Loki

Loki Season 1 Recap

The first season of Loki set up the multiverse premise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It begins as Loki uses the tesseract to escape capture after his attack on New York in 2012. He transports but the Time Variance Authority intercepts him. They take him to their headquarters where he gets tried and condemned as a Variant.

Mobius, a TVA agent, shows Loki a montage of his past crimes and his future where he causes his mother’s death. Loki agrees to help Mobius capture an even more dangerous Loki variant who kills other TVA agents.

Loki Season 1 Recap

Loki deduces that the variant hides in apocalyptic events. The TVA determines that the variant is currently hiding in a hurricane in Alabama in the year 2050. Loki confronts the variant who he discovers is a woman that goes by the name Sylvie. She escapes after rebuffing his offer to overthrow the TVA together.

She uses the distraction to infiltrate the TVA in search of the Time Keepers. Loki corners her and they both get attacked by Renslayer. Loki uses a TemPad to bring them to 2077 Lamentis-1, a moon about to be crushed by a planet. They work together to attempt to charge the TemPad to escape, but ultimately fail. When they form a romantic bond, they create a time branch and the TVA collects them before the moon’s demise.

They end up in front of the Time Keepers, but when they behead one, they discover the Keepers are only androids. Renslayer prunes Loki and Sylvie overpowers Renslayer demanding answers.

The Void

Loki winds up in the Void, a place after all time, and discovers many other pruned Loki variants. Sylvie prunes herself to discover where Loki went and get closer to the true Time Keeper.

Loki Season 1

Sylvie, Loki, and Mobius reunite in the Void, and with the help of other Variants, Sylvie and Loki enchant Alioth, a giant creature guarding the true Time Keeper. They head to the citadel and meet Kang: He Who Remains.

He gives them a choice: kill him and begin a multiversal war where countless other versions of himself destroy the universe or take over his position as the protector of the sacred timeline.

Sylvie kisses Loki to distract him and sends him back to the TVA so she can kill Kang. When Loki returns, he’s on a different timeline. Mobius doesn’t remember anything Loki tries to tell him. And a statue of Kang has replaced a statue of the Time Keepers.

Loki Season 2 Announcements

When we found out that Loki Season 2 was underway, Tom Hiddleston said, “I want to say thank you to the audience because without the audience, we wouldn’t be able to make a season two. I hope season one was full of surprises. And I think season two will be full of even more.”

Director Kate Herron played a large role in the creative direction and creation of Season 1. When asked if she would return for Season 2, she said that she was so focused on Season 1 that she couldn’t think about future seasons.

She said, “I think for me, I’m just so focused on this story and I’ve been so wrapped up in it for two years. I think I poured every aspect of my soul and my time into the show, and I think for me, that’s where my head’s at really, is just focusing on this.”

Sylvie - Loki Season 1

On the production of the first season, she said, “We were treating it like a movie, and we were running it like a movie. We weren’t doing it in the showrunner system. So it was a lot to direct these six episodes, and I gave it all of my energy and everything I had in my soul and in my heart. I threw everything I loved about Marvel at it.”

Whoever replaces her certainly has big shoes to fill.

Loki Season 2 Cast

Loki Season 2 Cast

As per usual, Marvel keeps the cards close to their chest when crafting content. As a result, we won’t know for certain who will play a role in the second season until at least the trailer. Some we probably won’t know for sure until they make their appearance in the show itself.

Tom Hiddleston will of course reprise his role as the God of Mischief. The one thing we don’t know for sure? How many versions of multiverse Loki we will get this season.

We know that Gugu Mbatha-Raw will once again play the role of Ravonna Renslayer. But not even she knows what this season has in store for her character.

She said, “Honestly, I genuinely don’t know where it’s going. I feel like there’s so much potential, especially when you’re dealing with time, as Renslayer does, you know? So, yeah, I don’t know. I sort of keep an open mind. I’ve been working quite intensely on something else over the last five months. So I don’t know. I’m sort of open to the next chapter. We’ll see. I would, of course, be open to (a movie). I don’t know where it’s all going at this point, but we’ll see.”

Additional Returning Characters

The Season 1 finale sets up Wunmi Mosaku to return as Hunter B-15, Tara Strong as the voice of the ominous Miss Minutes, and Owen Wilson as Mobius M Mobius.

Loki - Sylvie

Sophia Di Martino

Of course, we need Sophia Di Martino to return as Sylvie. After her dramatic betrayal of Loki in the finale, we need to see her witness with her own eyes the hell she unleashed with the assassination of He Who Remains. Actress Di Martino said she too is unsure of how her character will return. She might play a different variant; “I assume she’ll fundamentally still be the same character, but the multiverse makes even [that] a little bit complicated. We can meet anyone.”

Jonathan Majors

And speaking of He Who Remains, Jonathan Majors will certainly return as Kang the Conqueror. He practically promised it when he foreshadowed what would occur if the Lokis took him out. The massive statue of Kang in the TVA at the end of the final episode assured viewers that he will loom large in Loki Season 2.

Loki Season 2 Release Date Updates & Speculation

While Loki Season 2 doesn’t have an official release date yet, the timeline of other Marvel content can give us a clue of what fans can expect. Jonathan Majors will play a large role as Kang in Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so we can guess that the storylines of the two will intertwine.

The head writer for Loki Michael Waldron said, “Knowing that Kang was probably going to be the next big cross-movie villain, and because he is a time-traveling, multiversal adversary, it just always made so much sense.”

By that logic, Loki Season 2 should drop on the Disney+ streaming service around Summer 2023, as Quantumania releases July 28, 2023. We can’t wait to see how Marvel Studios Loki plays a role in the multiversal war and how the God of Mischief fulfills his glorious purpose.

We’ll keep this section updated as Disney releases more news! In the meantime, share with us your thoughts on Loki Season 1 below! Do you think it’s the best MCU series so far? (We put it in second right behind WandaVision!)
