From him portraying a lead role as Jamie Fraser in the Starz drama Outlander to his commendable charity initiatives, it seems like there’s nothing Sam Heughan cannot do. He is a Scottish actor, author, producer, and entrepreneur.
This Jack of all Trades might indeed have gathered a global fan base since starring in Outlander. However, Sam Heughan is more than just Jamie Fraser.
Sam Heughan was born in Dumfries and Galloway County on April 30, 1980. His parents named him after the characters from The Lord of the Rings, specifically Samwise Gamgee. Sam and his brother were raised single-handedly by their mother, Chrissie Heughan after their father had left them at a young age. He constantly moved from one hometown to another.
At age five, he went from Balmaclellan to New Galloway. There, he went to Kells Primary School. He then attended high school at James Gillespie’s for a year before transferring to Edinburgh Rudolf Steiner School up until the end of his sixth year.
It was as if actor Sam Heughan was already in his blood as he used to perform various plays at a young age. It includes The Twits, which is an adaptation of Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Seagull, and Romeo and Juliet, to name a few. Before graduating, Sam was one of the four students selected to represent the Royal Conservatory of Scotland at a radio talent competition by BBC Carleton Hobbs.
Heughan had his first professional TV show appearance through Island at War. Also, he had several television appearances since then until he got a recurring role in 2009. Also, Heughan played the role of Scott Nielson in the BBC series Doctors. In 2011, Heughan received a nomination for Most Inspiring Performance in Television during the 20th Annual Grace Awards. The nomination after starring in A Princess for Christmas.
The year 2013 saw Heughan as Jamie Fraser in the time travel drama Outlander. Besides being the first cast to be announced, Diana Gabaldon, who wrote the series, also praised Heughan for living the character of Jamie Fraser even before the filming began. The series premiered on August 9, 2014. And he and co-star Caitriona Balfe assumed the additional role of being producers of the show in 2019.
More casting news came for Heughan in 2020, including the romantic drama called It’s All Coming Back to Me alongside Celine Dion and Priyanka Chopra. In November of the same year, he and Outlander cast Graham McTavish published a travelog, Clanlands. The book landed No. 1 on New York Times’ Best Seller List. Also, Clanlands was a companion to Heughan’s and McTavish’s Men in Kilts: A Roadtrip with Sam and Graham.
Besides writing, producing, and starring in series and films, Sam Heughan actively participates in various philanthropic acts. In 2015, he spearheaded an organization called My Peak Challenge.
It aims to provide participants with a community while they work towards their personal goals and raise charity money. Also, the foundation partners with various institutions to increase funding for cancer research.
Who Is Sam Heughan Dating?
In March 2022, Sam Heughan was seen kissing a mystery woman in New York. Later on, sources revealed that the woman was Monica Clarke. She is reportedly represented by Wilhelmina Models and has been since she was fifteen. She’s originally from Victoria, Australia, but now lives in New York.
Heughan has yet to clarify the status between him and Monika Clarke. It might take a while to get confirmation from this sighting, though. In an interview in 2020, he revealed that he prefers privacy, stating that he chooses what he shares with the public.
Did Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan ever date?
With the onscreen chemistry that they have, Outlander fans undoubtedly rooted for Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe to be a real couple. However, the two already clarified that’s never been the case. In a BBC podcast in 2020, Heughan likened his relationship with Balfe to that of siblings.
Balfe, for her part, is aware of some vocal groups wishing them to be together. However, she disclosed that the idea is a testament to the characters they portray and the inspiring love story the series showed. Shippers might have to stick to the Outlander universe for these two, as Balfe is now married to Tony McGill, a music producer. The two just had their first child, a baby boy, in August of 2021
Outlander Season 7
Season 6 of Outlander ended on a very intense cliffhanger, despite being a shorter season overall. Sam Heughan, in an interview with US Weekly, revealed that Outlander Season 7 would be huge. And the series has already announced that Season 7 will have 16 episodes.
It sure is going to be bigger this time compared to the sixth season, which only had eight episodes. Sam Heughan reveals that he’s very excited to see Charles Vandervaart, who plays the role of William Ransom, who is Jamie’s son. The series has yet to announce the exact date of the season premiere. Though it’s likely to be sometime in early to mid 2023.
Sam Heughan’s Upcoming Projects
There were rumors going about Heughan being the next James Bond. He clarified that there’s no truth about it. However, he revealed that he once auditioned when they were still gearing up for Casino Royale. Additionally, he admitted that being part of the project would be good.
Fans must wait for a considerable amount of time before seeing Heughan in Outlander Season 7. While doing so, Heughan has another series coming up called Suspect. Also, his film It’s All Coming Back to Me is already in post-production and is expected to release around Valentine’s Day 2023. Since doing Men in Kilts, Heughan also wanted to produce more, even direct something. Directing is something he thinks of doing once Outlander ends.
And in efforts to diversify his assets, Heughan also launched his own whisky brand, The Sassenach named after his Outlander’s character’s nickname for his wife Claire. The whisky has won consecutive double golds in the 2020 and 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. And now the brand also offers a tequila, El Tequileño The Sassenach.
Additionally, it might also be a great treat to see Sam Heughan and the rest of the Outlander cast in San Diego Comic-Con this July. Though with no announcement yet, we’re not overly hopeful we’ll see the cast at SDCC.
However, it is confirmed that author Diana Gabaldon will be at New York Comic-Con 2022, so there’s a higher likelihood of the cast and showrunners attending for that event this October. (And maybe teasing a Outlander Season 7 release date – fans, keep your fingers crossed!)
