‘Our Flag Means Death’ Season 2: Release Date, News, Cast, and More
The premiere of Our Flag Means Death Season 2 is right around the corner! After an immensely successful first season on HBO Max, it was no surprise that the series, created by David Jenkins, was picked up for another season.
Here’s everything we know about the upcoming new episodes. But note, if you’ve not seen Season 1, there are possible spoilers ahead.
Our Flag Means Death is Back for Season 2
The pirate comedy series was renewed for another season that will air on Max. The network renewed the show in June 2022, much to the fans’ delight, and a few months after it premiered in March. Our Flag Means Death is praised by critics and viewers for its take on pirate history and its positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters and relationships.
Our Flag Means Death was created by David Jenkins. The show follows aspiring pirate captain Stede Bonnet who left his affluent life behind to sail the world on his ship called the Revenge. Stede travels with a crew that learns to adapt to his approach as a pirate.
He even manages to cross paths with the notorious Blackbeard, and as the show goes on, form an unlikely connection with each other. The bond Stede and Blackbeard share eventually leans into romance.
The first teaser trailer for Our Flag Means Death Season 2 was released on August 30, 2023. Take a look below.
Our Flag Means Death Cast
For Our Flag Means Death Season 2, obviously Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be back as Stede and Ed respectively. Darby and Waititi are longtime friends and collaborators. Both have worked on the 2007 comedy Flight of the Conchords. Darby is known for his supporting and guest roles in projects like Wrecked and in the 2017 and 2019 Jumanji movies.
Darby will be featured in Waititi’s upcoming movie, Next Goal Wins which will be released in November 2023. On the other hand, Waititi has been busy in the director’s chair, having done both Thor: Love and Thunder and Reservation Dogs. The writer-director-executive producer is currently working on a new Star Wars movie that is slated for a 2025 release. Waititi also has other projects in the works including Time Bandits for Apple TV+, and the live-action Akira.
Many of the Revenge crew are also expected to be back for the second season. This includes Nathan Foad as Lucius, Joel Fry as Frenchie, Samson Kayo as Oluwande, and Vico Ortiz as Jim. Also expected to return for Season 2 are Samba Schutte as Roach, Ewen Bremner as Buttons, Kristian Naim as Wee John, and Matthew Maher as Black Pete.
Con O’Neill will also return as Izzy as will Leslie Jones as Spanish Jackie.
Unfortunately, Guz Khan, who plays Ivan will not be returning for Our Flag Means Death Season 2. However, there are also new faces that will make their debut in the new season. This includes Minnie Driver who plays real-life pirate Anne Bonny, and Rulbo Qian as Susan. Madeline Sami and Anapela Polataivao are also joining Season 2.
What to Expect for Season 2
As viewers already know, Stede and Ed are apart following their love confessions for each other. Stede ended up revisiting his wife and children to gain some closure on that part of his life. He was seen on a dinghy boat coming to the aid of his crew, who were stranded on the island.
Meanwhile, Ed has once again embraced his notoriety, going by the name “Kraken” after being heartbroken by Stede running away. Ed has taken control of the Revenge with his own crew including Frenchie and Jim, keen on terrorizing the seas.
We can expect that Season 2 will see Stede and Ed reunite as well as more potential guest stars. The potential for more guest cameos follows the appearances of Fred Armisen and Will Arnett in Season 1.
Jenkins confirmed that Stede and Ed’s relationship will be the main focus for Season 2.
“We end in a place where there is this breakup,” Jenkins told Decider. “What happens after a breakup between these two people who, one’s realized he’s in love, and the other one is hurt in a way that he’s never been hurt before? What does that do to each of them in an action, pirate world with them trying to find each other again?”
Other Things to Expect
Waititi revealed to Collider in June 2022 that Our Flag Means Death Season 2 will be filming in New Zealand. Production for Season 2 was tentatively set to start in October 2022. However, production started sooner than expected on September 25. Season 2 wrapped filming by December 13, 2022.
According to Vanity Fair, there will be two armies appearing in the upcoming season at some point. One of them would be Chinese pirates and another would be navy officers. There would also be a storm in one of the episodes, as revealed by Nancy Hennah, who is in charge of hair and makeup.
O’Neill revealed that Izzy will have a big arc in Season 2, as the character “understands what love is and whom he’s in love with.” This is a stark contrast to where Izzy was in Season 1.
“Physically, it’s been quite demanding, and emotionally, it’s been quite demanding to be playing a man enraged by unrequited love, who’s basically a hopeless romantic, and to be able to play all that and also remember that this fundamentally a comedy,” said O’Neill.
Ortiz also shared a similar statement with his character Jim.
“Jim really evolves in Season 2,” said Ortiz. “They’re a bit more chatty and a bit more conversational…Most of the first season you see Jim in disguise, hiding, but in this one you see them a bit more, ‘Oh, this is my chosen family, and I feel good.’ There’s a bit more zaniness and a bit more softness.”
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Release Date
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 premieres on October 5, 2023. The first three episodes will be released on the premiere day, while the rest will air weekly. Our Flag Means Death Season 2 will also be exclusively available on MAX, just like its first season.
Already wondering about Our Flag Means Death Season 3? There’s no official word about that yet. But there’s a strong possibility given the show’s fan following. However, David Jenkins has said that a third season would also be the last.
