Good Omens Likely to Get a Season 3

While there’s no official confirmation yet, Good Omens seems on track for a renewal. A possible renewal would bring the series to its conclusion. The Prime Video and BBC series is based on the novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The first season premiered on May 31, 2019, with the second season premiering on July 28, 2023.

Deadline reported in October 2023 that Good Omens is “looking good” to be renewed by Prime Video and the BBC. Gaiman also weighed in on the article, saying that the streaming platform has “definitely been doing things that make a third season more likely.”

What is confirmed, however, is that Douglas Mackinnon will not be returning for a possible Season 3. Mackinnon was the co-showrunner, director, and executive producer of the series. He revealed his departure from the show in a post on Instagram. Mackinnon shared a photo of the set and while he didn’t name the production, fans recognized it immediately.

Having started a discussion about Good Omens in the comments section, Mackinnon replied, “I’m not involved with this show anymore.”

Gaiman, who also serves as showrunner for Good Omens, responded to a fan’s question about Mackinnon’s comment on Bluesky. The author said that Mackinnon “has moved on to other projects.”

Also worth noting, a production notice for the series went out in September following the end of the WGA strike. The listing for Good Omens Season 3 showed a production status of “pending renewal,” and shared a brief description for Season 3.

The forces of heaven and hell are set to return for another colorful battle over the fate of humankind. Season 2 explored storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale (Michael Sheen), a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fastliving demon Crowley (David Tennant). Having been on Earth since The Beginning and with the Apocalypse now thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.

Good Omens Cast

The cast of Good Omens is led by David Tennant as Crowley and Michael Sheen as Aziraphale. Jon Hamm plays Gabriel, the leader of the forces of Heaven. Should Good Omens Season 3 be announced, then we can expect these three characters to be back.

The same can be said for Doon Mackichan as the Archangel Michael, Derek Jacobi as Metatron, and Abigail Lawrie as Elspeth. Liz Carr as Saraqael, Elizabeth Berrington as Dagon, Paul Adeyefa as Eric, and Quelin Sepulveda as Muriel are expected to return.

Gloria Obianyo is also expected to return for Season 3 as Uriel. Other cast members expected to return for a possible Season 3 are Miranda Richardson, Maggie Service, Shelley Conn, and Nina Sosanya.

What Happened in Season 2?

Season 2 of Good Omens ended on quite a cliffhanger. It was revealed that Gabriel had a secret relationship with Beelzebub. The romance between the two beings led to the decision that another apocalypse was not worth pursuing. However, upon learning about Gabriel and Beelzebub’s romantic relations, the angels planned to erase his memory and reduce his angelic status.

After finding out about his punishment, Gabriel temporarily wiped his memory and placed it in a storage fly given to him by Beelzebub. Ultimately, he was able to remember everything and decided to run away with Beelzebub so they could be together. This left Heaven and Hell without leaders.

Not long after, Aziraphale decided to be the leader of Heaven instead. He also decides to bring Crowley along so they can be together. At the end of Season 2, Aziraphale tells Crowley he forgives him before they go their separate ways.

Good Omens Season 3 Plot

Gaiman has also said that a possible Good Omens Season 3 would bring the show to its conclusion. He responded to another fan’s question on Tumblr on whether there might be a season 4 in which he said no. In another post on Tumblr, Gaiman was asked by a fan if he was willing to conclude Good Omens in another medium should Prime Video cancel it.

“Absolutely. I wouldn’t want to leave it mid-story,” said Gaiman, who also revealed in a separate thread that he has already written the first draft of Season 3 Episode 1 and the last 15 pages of Episode 6.

“If it wasn’t for strikes I’d have most of it written by now. As it is, a first draft of Episode 1 and the final fifteen pages of Episode 6 (in case I get hit by a bus) are written, and the rest of it has to wait until the strike is done and we can pick up our pens. When the strike was called I took the post-it notes with the Season 3 episode breakdowns off the walls and put them sadly away.”

In July 2023, Gaiman echoed the update on X, saying that a Season 3 is already in the works and that he would have been writing if the WGA strike wasn’t going on. He also cited three things that fans of the book and the show can do to get Good Omens renewed.

“Ways to help make ‘Good Omens’ Season 3 happen are A) watch Season 2, B) Get people who know nothing of Good Omens to start watching S1, and C) Encourage the studios to negotiate with WGA,” said Gaiman, who is a member of the WGA.

What Else to Expect

Should Good Omens Season 3 be confirmed, then it would explore the reunion of Aziraphale and Crowley. For that to happen, Aziraphale might have to juggle both being the leader of Heaven and finding a new leader for Hell. He might even opt to look for Beelzebub and Gabriel to convince them to return or persuade the other angels and demons to coexist.

In June 2023, Gaiman revealed on Tumblr that Season 3 would be based on the unwritten sequel to the novel. He clarified that Season 2 was planned to set up the events of the third season.

“Terry and I plotted a sequel to ‘Good Omens,’” said Gaiman. “Many ideas from the conversations we had about the sequel – not plot stuff, but character stuff and place stuff – made their way into the first TV series. The second season isn’t the sequel. It’s something I plotted with the brilliant John Finnemore that allows us to get gracefully from the end of book one to the place that the second novel would have started.”

“If ever there’s a third TV series that will be the story of the second novel,” said the author.

Good Omens Season 3 Release Date News & Speculation

Since no formal renewal announcement has been made, we won’t really know if or when Good Omens Season 3 will premiere. Should Good Omens Season 3 become a reality, however, the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes might push the premiere date even further. We can only speculate a mid-2026 premiere date for a possible Season 3 based on an earlier statement from Gaiman.

But, Gaiman has an idea of when a possible Season 3 might premiere. In the same thread on Tumblr back in July, he revealed a potential premiere date if production resumes in 2024.

“If we shot it in 2024, it would probably be released in early ‘26. (We started shooting S2 in October 2021. It’s about a year in post-production from wrap to release,” said Gaiman.

For now, fans can rewatch the first two seasons on Prime Video.
