The Boys Season 5: Is It Happening?

Amazon has yet to officially announce that The Boys has been renewed for Season 5. However, a listing from Production Weekly and a number of other news sites are reporting that the series has been renewed despite the lack of an official announcement. In fact, sources are reporting that The Boys Season 5 went into pre-production in Jauary, and is set to begin filming  on April 8th in Toronto.

Showrunner Eric Kripke shared in an interview with Inverse that he’s learned his lesson on predicting how many seasons a show will last. This was referencing his time serving as the showrunner for Supernatural, where Kripke left after five seasons. The show would go on for 10 more seasons. This opinion has certainly changed especially with the success of The Boys and when Gen V was renewed for a second season.

“I have since realized that literally no one in history is worse at predicting the amount of seasons of a show, like literally. I have learned my lesson and I’ve stopped predicting how many seasons these shows go. You will find out in hindsight,” said Kripke.

In September 2023, Amazon executive Vernon Sanders also talked about the future of The Boys.

“I will say this. Eric has had a vision for what this all leads to for years now. And we’ve been in an ongoing conversation about what comes next,” Sanders told Entertainment Weekly. “So it’s probably premature to talk about that beyond saying we believe in Eric and if Eric is interested in continuing the story, we’ll be the first ones in line to really work with him on what that is.”

Season 5 Cast

Until Amazon confirms the show’s renewal, fans can probably expect most of the core cast to be back for Season 5. Depending on what happens in Season 4, fans can expect Karl Urban to return as Billy Butcher and Antony Starr as Homelander.

Also very likely to return for a potential Season 5 are Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Jessie T. Usher, Laz Alonso, Chace Crawford, Timer Capone, Karen Fukuhara, Colby Minifie, Claudia Doumit, and Cameron Crovetti. For Season 4, the show introduced Susan Heyward, Valorie Curry, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Whether or not they will return for Season 5 depends on what happens to their characters in Season 4.

Until then, who else might be joining The Boys for a fifth season remains to be seen. Fans will have to wait and see.

What Happened So Far?

The official synopsis for The Boys Season 4 reads:

“The world is on the brink. Victoria Neuman is closer than ever to the Oval Office and under the muscly thumb of Homelander, who is consolidating his power. Butcher, with only months to live, has lost Becca’s son as well as his job as The Boys’ leader. The rest of the team are fed up with his lies. With the stakes higher than ever, they have to find a way to work together and save the world before it’s too late.”

It’s also known that The Boys Season 4 picks up days after the events of the Gen V finale. It makes sense that both shows tend to overlap one another in terms of time. Kripke and Gen V showrunner Michele Fazekas said they need to be in constant communication so both their shows can meld together.

“When they were breaking the virus storyline, they just had to be in regular communication with me in my room to understand, ‘Is that a thing out in the world that’ll be helpful to us or is it going to f*** us?’,” said Kripke to Entertainment Weekly in October 2023.

“Also, it can’t get too complicated,” said Fazekas. “You should be able to watch Gen V and not watch The Boys. You can watch The Boys and not watch Gen V. But talking to each other and being consistent is always important.”

What to Expect in Upcoming Episodes

Since Season 4 of The Boys has yet to premiere, the teaser that was released by the show in December 2023 revealed some details about some of the characters.

“Homelander is standing trial and taking a splatter paint class. One of those statements is true. Butcher has six months to live, and still knows about that virus being cooked at Godolkin. Neuman is closer than ever to changing her title from ‘Congresswoman’ to ‘VP.’” the show said in a post on X (formerly Twitter). “Sage and Firecracker are two of the most dangerous supes you’ll ever meet, and let’s just leave it at that for now. Deep hasn’t changed one f***in’ bit. MM is still the team’s rock, just with less beard. Somehow, Noir has returned.”

The Boys Season 5 Release Date Speculation

Until Amazon officially confirms The Boys Season 5, there’s no release date for the new season. However, according to the February 7, 2024, issue of Production Weekly, filming for The Boys Season 5 is scheduled to start on April 8, 2024, and will continue through August 22nd. Production will be done under the working title “MARATHON 5959.”

For comparison, Season 4 wrapped almost one year ago, from August 22, 2022, through April 12, 2023. The Boys Season 4 was meant to be released later in 2023. But because of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, showrunner Eric Kripke postponed the premiere.

The upcoming fourth season, which is comprised of eight episodes in total, will debut with three episodes on June 13. The Season 4 finale will air on July 18.

For now, fans can rewatch the first three seasons on Prime Video. There is also its spinoff, Gen V, which was also renewed for another season. The equally bloody The Boys: Diabolical animated series is also available to watch all over again.

But those two shows aren’t the only spinoffs. There is reportedly going to be a Mexico-set version of the show that’s already in the works.
