‘Ghosts’ Season 4: Everything Fans Need to Know

Ghosts Season 4

One of our favorite supernatural comedy series, Ghosts, is returning for Season 4! CBS renewed the show, based on the British series of the same name, which is currently airing Season 3. While many details regarding Season 4 are still up in the air, fans can rest easy knowing that Sam, Jay, and the ghosts are definitely coming back for more.

Here’s what we know so far about Ghosts Season 4. Note that possible spoilers for Season 3 are ahead.

Ghosts Season 4 Is Happening

Not long after Ghosts Season 3 premiered, CBS renewed the comedy series for Season 4. The network cited the show’s increasing popularity and high viewership ratings for its greenlighting of another season. CBS made the announcement alongside another show that it renewed, Fire Country.

Ghosts and Fire Country are proven viewer favorites on both broadcast and streaming thanks to exceptional storytelling, talented actors, and an ever-growing fanbase,” said CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach. Ghosts Season 4 will be part of the network’s 2024-2025 lineup of programs.

According to Deadline, the early renewal of Ghosts for Season 4 may likely be due to the network planning ahead of a potential IATSE strike.

Joe Port and Joe Wiseman serve as showrunners of Ghosts. Port and Wiseman also executive produce the show alongside Trent O’Donnell, Jay Karas, and Matthew Baynton. Jim Howick, Simon Farnaby, Laurence Rickard, Ben Willbond, Martha Howe-Douglas, Alison Carpenter, Debra Hayward, Alison Owen, and Angie Stephenson also serve as executive producers.

Season 4 Cast

While something can still happen by the end of Season 3, fans can assume that the main cast will be returning. For Ghosts Season 4, we can most certainly expect Rose McIver and Utkarsh Ambudkar as Sam and Jay. Also expected to return for Season 4 is Brandon Scott Jones as Captain Isaac Higgintoot. Danielle Pinnock is also expected to come back as Alberta Haynes, as well as Richie Moriarty as Pete Martino.

Others who are expected to come back for Ghosts Season 4 are Asher Grodman as Trevor Lefkowitz, Devan Chandler Long as Thor, Rebecca Wisocky as Hetty Woodstone, Roman Zaragoza as Sasappis, Betsy Sodaro as Nancy, John Hartman as Nigel Chessum, Tristan D. Lalla as Mark, and Odessa A’zion as Stephanie.

Of course, a new season would mean new guest stars as living or ghostly characters.

One challenge the show is facing for Ghosts Season 3 is to conceal McIver’s pregnancy. The actress announced her pregnancy during the Golden Globes. The showrunners revealed that they opted out of writing this in. However, Wiseman said that they weren’t ruling out the possibility of the show’s main couple having a baby in the future.

“We’re not writing it in. Currently, Jay and Sam aren’t going to have kids,” Wiseman told TV Insider in February 2024. “That is something that could happen down the line.”

“We’re not writing in, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a baby in future seasons. It would be fun to see all the ghosts’ perspectives on parenting,” said Port.

What Happened in Season 3?

In Season 3 of Ghosts, it was revealed in the premiere that Flower was sucked off. By Episode 2, Sass is also revealed to be able to directly communicate with Jay by entering his dreams. This has left fans wondering if Jay will be able to communicate with the ghosts as Sam does.

“All of these things are big, big world-changing moments. And they feel like all of them would be like a new season right? So as we hopefully – knock wood – continue to bring this show to people every Thursday for years to come, I imagine all of these things will be on the table. So it’s an exciting idea, I think right now. The thing about this show that’s been so genuinely fun is they know when and how to slowly sort of give this information out. And I think it’s special that Jay eases his way into this world if that’s what they want to do,” Utkarsh Ambudkar told Cinemablend early in March 2024.

Ambudkar also shared that it’s always a challenge to film scenes where he has to pretend he can’t see the ghosts.

“Oh man, that’s a daily challenge. It’s a daily occurrence. I’ll say every time all of the ghosts and Sam and I, Rose and I, are in a room together, I can imagine our first AD and our crew just rolling their eyes behind the camera, just like, ‘Can we actually get to shooting what we’re supposed to shoot?’ Because we’re having such a good time. We really are,” said the actor.

In 2022, Wiseman told Cinemablend that it is “nicer” when Jay can’t see the ghosts. Wiseman added that he likes the dynamic that Sam and Jay currently have and that it is “sweet” when Sam tells Jay what’s going on.

What to Expect in Season 4

Given that Season 3 is still airing, it’s hard to say what fans can expect for Ghosts Season 4. However, the question of whether Flower has officially crossed over still stands. Should that be the case, then the stakes would have increased significantly for the ghostly tenants. This would mean that any ghost, including the main ones, can be taken away to the other side.

It can be expected that Isaac and Nigel’s relationship will continue to blossom to Season 4. The upcoming season may even put some focus on other ghosts such as Stephanie and Crash. As for Sam and Jay, they will definitely continue to start up their BnB while having to deal with the estate’s ghostly residents and their problems.

Ghosts Season 4 Release Date News

There’s no official release date just yet for Ghosts Season 4 since Season 3 is still on air. However, production for the upcoming season is expected to start in Montreal in the summer of 2024.

In the meantime, Wiseman and Port have teased an episode of Ghosts Season 3. The upcoming episode will see Pete try and track down his living wife through Sam.

“We’re now starting to enter the part of the series where the ghosts are seeing a huge upside to having Samantha in their lives and having the ability to communicate with her,” Port told TV Line. “The other ghosts, while they might be slightly jealous that their significant others from centuries past are no longer around, are very supportive and happy for Pete.”

Despite the gesture, Wiseman teased that Jay, who is a science-fiction fan, might be warier about doing this. Wiseman said that Jay knows “that when people start messing with the line between the living and the dead…there’s always something that goes horribly wrong. So he cautions Sam against doing that, much to the chagrin of Pete and the other ghosts. And I won’t say whether he turns out to be correct or not. But I don’t think people are going to be surprised that something goes awry.”

Ghosts currently airs every Thursday, 8:30 PM ET on CBS. All seasons of the show are also available to stream on Paramount+.
