The Strange House
For a pretty entertaining Austrian horror story, check out ‘The Strange House’ on Netflix. It was released in 2020 but I had never heard of it until recently. The story is about a woman and her two sons (Julia Koschitz, Leon Orlandianyi and Benno Rosskopf) who move from Germany to a small village in Austria. One of the sons, in that awkward teen stage, is not happy at all about the move and is full of that teen angst. The younger son is pretty happy and content with anything. It is not long though before strange things begin to happen such as the youngest son sleepwalking, drawing or carving backwards on the wall in his brothers room and talking in another language. Other things happen such as the family photo the mom placed on the wall continually getting replaced with the photo of the previous family that lived in the house.
It is the previous family that has people in the town talking about and scared of the house. The story is that the mom poisoned her two sons and killed herself in the house and since the house has been haunted. As the story is told to the two sons, they befriend two other kids in the area who help them try to figure out the truth behind the story and possibly solve the murder.
The film is definitely a ghost story that will appeal to teenagers as well as adults. While it does have some moments that are pretty corny, overall it offers solid acting, a good storyline and decent special effects. Not too bad at all for a few scares.
