Vivo
Ok, I am going to get this out there up front and say that I am probably one of the handful of people in the world who has not watched all of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s monstrous hit, ‘Hamilton.’ With that being said, I just watched a screening of Miranda’s animation film – by Sony Pictures Animation – ‘Vivo’ and absolutely loved it, including the voiceovers, the characters, the animation and, especially, the music. This is actually a great animated musical. Based on what I heard in this film, I will be going back to ‘Hamilton’ to watch it again, all the way through this time.
‘Vivo’ is about an elderly street musician named Andres and his partner, Vivo (voiced by Miranda) who just happens to be a kinkajou or what is also known as a rain forest ‘honey bear.’ After performing together one evening, Andres receives a letter from his former, now-famous, musical partner, Marta Sandoval (voiced by Gloria Estefan), who requests that he come and see her perform her last show in Miami before she retires. All plans are being made to go but it happens that Andres passes away in his sleep that same night. It is unfortunate as Andres had romantic feelings for Marta but never told her in person but did write her a song expressing his feelings. Vivo realizes that he has to take the song to Marta to make Andres’ last wish come true. Needless to say the adventure begins on the trip to Miami as Vivo makes new friends, and enemies, and has to get to Marta before she finished her last show.
I have already read some early reviews not giving this film much love and I don’t get it as the animation is excellent and the songs tie in just beautifully with every moment in the film. This is a film with a wonderfully diverse cast of characters and a great storyline. It is a touching film as well that has a great message for us all.
This film, with all the color, animation and new music, has definitely made a Lin-Manuel Miranda fan out of me!
