After moving to Los Angeles in the mid-1980s, Thornton decided to establish an acting career with buddy Tom Epperson. The pair would work on numerous writing projects together later on.

Unfortunately, his plans of becoming an actor did not materialize as soon as he had hoped. And after meeting director and screenwriter Billy Wilder, Thornton began to take an interest in screenwriting.
